Bronx, N.Y. - (Jan. 24, 2009) - The Fordham swimming & diving teams hosted the La Salle Explorers at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon, and came away with two victories as the women defeated La Salle, 149-83, while the men captured a 138-103 win over the Explorers.
With the sweep, the Fordham women improve to 8-2 on the season, while the men are now 5-3 overall.
The meet opened with Fordham wins in the women's and men's 400 medley relay. Caitlin Napoli, Nicole Marshall, Kelly Bunster, and Tressa Dunn posted a season-best time of 3:52.51 for the women, while Billy Colton, Sean McManus, Ryan Coombs and Justin Coombs took home the top spot in 3:31.47.
The Rams then reeled off 15 straight event wins to take control of the meet. Ashley Ukleja started the streak by taking the women's 1000 freestyle in 10:35.59, while Lucien Monson took the men's 1000 freestyle in a season-best time of 9:51.50.
In the 200 freestyle, Napoli won the women's event in 1:54.45, while Ryan Coombs was also first in 1:44.41, while in the 50 freestyle, Dunn took the women's event in 24.89 seconds with Justin Coombs winning the men's event in 21.79 seconds.
In the 200 individual medley, Marshall placed first in 2:09.78, while Jon Castaldo won the men's event in a personal-best time of 2:00.37.
Then in the 200 butterfly, Ryan Coombs picked up his second event win in a season-best time of 1:56.61, while Courtney Collyer won the women's event in 2:06.92. The 100 freestyle saw Bunster post a season-best time of 52.52 seconds for the event win, with Justin Coombs recording his second win of the day (47.58).
The Rams also swept the 500 freestyle as Napoli (5:06.83) and Monson (4:49.54) both posted their second event win of the afternoon. Kristin Colton capped the swimming wins, capturing the 200 backstroke in 2:09.12.
In diving, Andrea Krok won both women's events, recording scores of 244.12 (1M) and 249.23 (3M), while Benjamin Otto won the one-meter dive with a season-best score of 295.58.
The Fordham swimming & diving teams will next be in action on Saturday, January 31st, as they host the University of Massachusetts, beginning at 1:00 PM.
