Liam Smith joined the Fordham staff in 2017 after serving as the director of player personnel for George State University in 2016, his fourth season with the program. He served as the Rams’ defensive quality control coach in 2017.
In 2017, the Fordham defense ranked third in the Patriot League in turnover margin (0.18) and had three players earn All-Patriot League honors, including freshman linebacker Glenn Cunningham, who received Freshman All-America accolades.

As the director of player personnel at Georgia State, Smith was responsible for coordinating all aspects of recruiting, including the evaluation of film of potential recruits prior to forwarding to the recruiting coach. He also set up and oversaw official/unofficial visits as well as junior days.

Prior to serving as the Panther’s director of player personnel, Smith spent the previous three years as a graduate assistant for the Panthers, working with the defense, a unit that was the most improved defense in the FBS in 2015. He coached the safeties in daily field activities and coached the returners for both the punt and kickoff return. Smith also broke down weekly opponent game film and ran the scout teams.

Smith joined the GSU staff in 2013 from Rutgers, where he worked four years as a student assistant for the football program. He assisted with the scout team and film breakdown used by the defensive coaches, working under the defensive backs coach at each practice. Smith also served as an operation assistant for the Scarlet Knights, working with the youth camps.

A native of Mahwah, N.J., Smith earned his bachelor's degree in history from Rutgers in 2013.
