Mary McConnell was added to head coach Cathy Andruzzi's women's basketball staff as an assistant coach in July 2010, after previously spending three seasons as an assistant coach for the Fairleigh Dickinson University Knights. In addition to recruiting and administrative duties, McConnell will assist Andruzzi with coaching the guards.
"We are excited to have Mary as part of our staff," remarked Cathy Andruzzi. "Mary had an excellent playing career at Bryant College as a 1,000-point scorer. With our team having a rotation of talented veteran guards, I think Mary's experience and knowledge will be a great asset to their growth. Mary's ties in the New England area and connections with AAU programs will be valuable to the program."
"I am excited to be a part of the Fordham Women's Basketball program, and honored for the opportunity to work with Coach Andruzzi," remarked McConnell. "I look forward to competing in the Atlantic-10 Conference with such a committed staff, and with a University so rich in tradition."
With the Knights, McConnell assisted head coach Peter Cinella with the development and implementation of practice plans, individual work outs and game strategies. She organized and facilitated staff recruiting travel schedules and on-campus recruiting visits; created and presented scouting reports and oversaw the women's basketball budget. She was also in charge of the marketing and organization of FDU women's basketball summer camps.
Prior to her stint with FDU, McConnell spent two seasons as a graduate assistant for Providence College, where she completed a Master's degree in educational counseling. At Providence, she coordinated film exchange with BIG EAST and non-conference opponents, managed the team's community service events and scheduled hom and away practices in addition to her coaching duties on the court.
A native of Pawtucket, R.I., McConnell spent the summer of 2006 as a camp director for Phil Seymore Basketball Camps. She held two years tenure in Bryant's Athletics Administration office, assisting the Athletic Director and Associate AD, by coordinating game contracts and events, as well as devising transportation schedules. McConnell was an assistant coach with Rhode Island College's women's program during the 2004-05 season and served in the same capacity for the Amateur Athletic Union-affiliated Rhode Island Breakers in the summer of 2003.
McConnell played for Division II Bryant College in Smithfield, R.I., receiving a bachelor of science in Business Administration. She was a 1,000-point scorer and co-captain in her senior season, en route to Northeast 10 Third Team All-Conference (2003-04) acclaim, 2004 NCAA East recognition and 2004 Rhode Island Basketball Media Player of the Year accolades. McConnell also earned D-II Regional All-Tournament Team status, was a two-time ECAC All-Tournament team honoree and received the 2003-04 Distinguished Athlete of the Year sponsored by the Rhode Island Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women.
