Ed Argast, who spent two years on head coach Tom Masella's staff at Central Connecticut, begins his third year at Fordham as the Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator. He is also responsible for the offensive line. Last year, the Argast-led Fordham offense finished second in the Patriot League in scoring offense, averaging 29.0 points per game, after averaging 12.0 points per game in 2006. The Rams also ranked second in the conference in both rushing and passing offense, averaging 177.2 rushing yards/game and 224.0 passing yards/game, while also placing second in total offense (401.2 yards/game). The Fordham offense had six players earn All-Patriot League honors, including freshman running back Xavier Martin, who earned 2007 Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors. Nationally, the 2007 Fordham offense ranked 35th in total offense, 37th in scoring offense and 40th in both rushing and passing offense in the NCAA FCS. As the Offensive Coordinator at Central Connecticut in 2004 and 2005, Argast helped the Blue Devils set a new school record in scoring with 261 points in 2004 as well as leading the Northeast Conference (NEC) in total offense in 2004 with 361.7 yards/game. During a five-game winning streak that season, Central Connecticut set a school record by scoring 28 points or more in each of the five games. In total, the Blue Devil offense posted 27 or more points in eight of the ten games in 2004 and produced the NEC's Offensive Player of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year. Several other Central Connecticut offensive records fell in 2004, including most touchdown passes in a year. In 2005, Argast's offense scored 273 points in eleven games while leading the NEC in rushing offense, averaging 171.7 yards/game on the ground, and in passing efficiency with a 140.72 rating, 19th best in the NCAA I-AA. The Blue Devils had three players named to the NEC All-Conference Team as well as having their second straight NEC Offensive Rookie of the Year. Prior to his two years at Central Connecticut, Argast was the offensive coordinator at Wagner College in 2003 while also serving as the quarterbacks coach for the Seahawks. Before joining the staff at Wagner, Argast was the head coach at Canisius College for three years (1999-2002). Argast also has Patriot League experience, spending 12 years on the staff at his alma mater, Colgate University, holding such positions as defensive line coach, recruiting coordinator, offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Prior to Colgate, Argast spent six seasons at the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. following stops at Princeton and Bates College. He is an active member of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). A three-year letter winner for the Red Raiders, Argast earned a degree in Political Science in 1978 and a Master's in Education from Rutgers in 1985. He was inducted into the Seton Hall Prep Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997. Argast and his wife, Jane, have five children: Deirdre, Daniel, Charles, Patrick and Jack.
