    Assistant Coach - Running Backs
Custavious Patterson starts his sixth season on the staff at Fordham after spending a year on head coach Tom Masella's staff at Central Connecticut State. He will be responsible for the running backs in 2011 after guiding the wide receivers the previous five years. The 2010 season was another banner year for the Fordham wide receivers with senior Jason Caldwell leading the Patriot League and ranking tied for 12th in the NCAA FCS in receptions/game (6.5). He also placed second in the league and 23rd in the NCAA FCS in receiving yards/game (82.7). Caldwell, who was named a Sporting News Preseason All-America and to The Sporting News' Preseason Top Ten Wide Receiver list, graduated with 186 career receptions for 2,643 yards and 18 touchdowns. He ranks second on the Fordham all-time receptions and receiving yards lists and fourth on the career touchdown list. Under Patterson's tutelage in 2009, Caldwell received Third Team All-America honors from the Associated Press after turning in one of the most productive season for a Fordham wide receiver, catching 79 passes for 1,252 yards and nine touchdowns. The 79 receptions and 1,252 receiving yards are both second-best single season totals in school history, while his nine touchdown catches tied him for third. Caldwell, who was named an ECAC All-Star and First Team All-Patriot League in 2009, led the Patriot League in receptions per game (7.2) and receiving yards/game (113.8), ranked third in the NCAA FCS in total receiving yards and receiving yards/game, tied for tenth in receptions/game and 26th in all-purpose yards/game. Caldwell, who was the 2009 team MVP, wasn't the only receiver to be honored in 2009 as Asa Lucas, who set a school record with a 98-yard touchdown catch, was selected to play in the 2009 east Coast Bowl while Branden Anderson was named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Overall, the Fordham passing game finished the season as the second-rated passing unit in the NCAA FCS in 2009, averaging 337.1 yards/game. In 2009, the Fordham receiving corps helped quarterback John Skelton become Fordham's all-time leading passer as the Ram wide-outs caught 234 passes for 2,655 yards and 15 touchdowns. In June of 2009, Patterson was one of three Fordham coaches who participated in the sixth annual Lauren's First and Goal Football Camp at Lafayette College. The one-day clinic featured 275 college coaches who volunteered their time to teach aspiring football players the in-and-outs of the game and raise money for Lauren's First and Goal, acharitable organization created to support pediatric brain tumor research, support local pediatric cancer services, provide financial assistance to families living with a pediatric cancer diagnosis and to raise public awareness regarding pediatric brain tumors. In 2007, Patterson guided a receiving corps that helped Fordham finish with the second-ranked passing offense in the Patriot League. The Fordham passing offense was led by receivers Richard Rayborn, who led the team in receptions, along with Asa Lucas, a 2007 Second Team All-Patriot League selection. Over the past five years, Patterson has coached two players who have received the Bill Tierney Award, given annually to the Fordham varsity player who, in the estimate of his teammates, represents the spirit that Tierney so unselfishly exemplified. Mike Melvin was the 2006 recipient while Sylvester Clarke received the award in 2007. At Central Connecticut in 2005, Patterson served as the wide receivers coach after spending 2004 on the staff at Leon High School in Tallahassee, Florida. At Leon, Patterson was the head junior varsity coach and the wide receivers coach for the varsity. Patterson has also gained professional coaching experience, first with a Minority Coaching Internship with the New York Giants in 2007, working with the quarterbacks and wide receivers, and then serving as a Guest Coach with the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the CFL in 2008. Patterson earned a bachelor's degree from Morgan State in 2004 and was a one-year starter at quarterback for the Bears. Prior to Morgan State, he was an All-Conference and Honorable Mention All-American quarterback at SUNY-Morrisville for two seasons, where he holds the career records for passing touchdowns and total yardage and was a team captain in his final season. In June of 2006, Patterson was inducted into the Morrisville State College Athletic Hall of Fame.
