Jamaica, N.Y. – It was a homecoming for Fordham head men's head soccer coach Carlo Aquista, who played his collegiate soccer for the St. John's, winning a national championship with the Red Storm thirty years ago in 1996. But this year's version of the Red Storm didn't welcome him back with open arms. Instead they "welcomed" the Rams to Cox Family Field Belson Stadium by dropping Fordham, 2-0.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 2-4-1 while St. Jon's evens its record at 3-3-0.
The game was even in the first half but Rams went a man down with three minutes remaining when Marc-Alexandra Happi Emaga was called for his second yellow of the match.
The Red Storm took advantage of Fordham being a man down when they lined up for a direct kick in the 67
th minute that was directed into the box and headed past Ram keeper
Shayon Kashi.
St. John's added a second goal in the 78
th minute.
Notes
• The Rams has a good scoring chance in the 59th minute when
Gavin Flickinger took a cross but has his shot blocked. The ball then went to
Nico Linares who got off a blast from 20 yards that banged off the crossbar.
• Kashi made two saves in the Fordham net.
• Fordham was outshot by St. John's 13-7.
• Only one corner kick was taken in the game and is was by Fordham.
• The two teams met in the first round of the 1996 NCAA Championship; a game won by St. John's.
What's Next?
• The Rams open Atlantic 10 play on Saturday, September 19, as they host the Loyola University Chicago Rambles at Moglia Stadium at 2:00 p.m.
• It will be the seventh meeting between the two clubs with the Ramblers leading the all-time series, 4-1-1.
• The two teams played to a 1-1 tie in Chicago last fall.
