PHILADELPHIA, PA --The Fordham women's basketball team got a 16-point showing from the bench, but fell 70-53 to the La Salle Explorers on the road Saturday.
The Rams (9-15, 1-12) had two players score in double figures, led by Alexis Black, who had 14 points and two steals. Anastasija Veljovic tacked on 10 points, nine rebounds and two steals and Emma Wilson-Saltos added five points and six rebounds.
Led by Veljovic's six offensive rebounds, Fordham did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 15 boards that resulted in 15 second chance points.
The Fordham defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 16 La Salle turnovers. Those takeaways turned into six points on the other end of the floor. Veljovic's two steals led the way individually for the Rams.
How It Happened
After trading the first eight points of the game 4-4, Fordham went on a 5-0 run with 7:36 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Ornella Niankan, to take a 9-4 lead. The Rams then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 18-11.
La Salle kept adding to that lead, building a 33-17 advantage before Fordham went on a 5-0 run to narrow its deficit to 33-22. The Rams continued to chip away, reducing the La Salle lead to 36-26 heading into the break.
Fordham started to cut into the deficit after halftime, bringing it to 50-42 by the end of the third quarter. Fordham played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 16 points in the paint.
La Salle kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 66-45 advantage before Fordham went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Wilson-Saltos' layup, to shrink the deficit to 66-51 with 3:13 to go in the contest. La Salle responded and outscored the Rams the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 70-53. Fordham took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 11 points in the paint.
