Trumbull, Conn. – It came down to the last match but Fordham's
Dhananjay Athreya was able to get by his Sacred Heart opponent to lead the Rams to a 4-3 win over the Pioneers at the Tennis Club of Trumbull.
The match opened with the Pioneers taking the doubles point, winning two of the three doubles matches. Fordham's
Will Lokier and
Mateusz Gradzki defeated Brennan Hart-Nova and Martin Macias at third doubles before Sacred Heart took the second position. The doubles point came down to first doubles which went to a tiebreaker before Tomasz Garbacz and Frederick McRae got by Fordham's
Dhillon Virdee-Oakley and
Diego Cueto, 7-6(3).
Sacred Heart too second singles to go up 2-0 before Gradzki defeated Tomasz Garbacz at first singles, 6-2, 6-3, to get the Rams on the board.
Lokier tied the match at two when he knocked off Martin Macias at third singles, 6-4, 6-4, but the Pioneers took a 3-2 lead with a win at fourth singles.
Timotej Stofa got things even again when he defeated Connor Liona at the sixth position which meant the match came down to fifth singles.
Dhananjay Athreya took the first set from Paul Gonzales, 6-1, before dropping the second, 6-3. But he came back to win the third set 6-1 to win the match for the Rams.
