Women's Basketball Falls to Duquesne 80-67

BRONX, NY --The Fordham University women's basketball team shot 50 percent from beyond the arc, but fell to the Duquesne Dukes 80-67 at home Saturday.

The Rams (10-16, 2-13) had two players score in double figures, led by Lakresha Edwards, who had a career high 24 points. Carryn Easley added 11 points and five assists and Tia Morgan added nine points and three steals. Anastasija Veljovic pulled down six offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Fordham, grabbing 13 boards and turning them into two second chance points.

The Fordham defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 13 Duquesne turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 15 points on the other end of the floor, with Morgan's three steals leading the way individually for the Rams. The Rams as a team shot 11-for-22 from beyond the arc, a season high for made three pointers as a team.

How It Happened

After playing to a 2-2 tie early in the game, Fordham went on an 8-0 run with 7:28 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Kaila Berry, to take a 10-2 lead. Duquesne then responded to tie things up at 17-17 heading into the second quarter. Fordham capitalized on four Duquesne turnovers in the period, turning them into six points on the other end of the floor.

Fordham then started off the second quarter by going on a 10-0 run, highlighted by a three from Edwards, to take a 27-17 lead. The Dukes cut into that lead, but the Rams still enjoyed a 34-33 advantage heading into halftime. Fordham was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four three-point shots to account for 12 of its 17 points.

Fordham then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Dukes 62-46 entering the fourth. Fordham knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 12 total points.

Duquesne kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing an 80-55 advantage before Fordham went on a 12-0 run to shrink the deficit to 80-67 with 1:12 to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Fordham fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 21 points.
