RICHMOND, VA --The Fordham women's basketball team got a 30-point showing from the bench Wednesday, but fell 84-65 to the Richmond Spiders on the road.
The Rams (8-7, 0-4) had two players score in double figures, led by Ornella Niankan, who had 12 points, six rebounds and three steals. Carryn Easley tacked on 10 points, four assists and a career high four steals, and Emma Wilson-Saltos added eight points.
Niankan pulled down five offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Fordham, grabbing 15 boards and turning them into nine second chance points.
The Fordham defense was a problem in Wednesday's game, forcing 17 Richmond turnovers while committing 16. Those takeaways turned into 15 points on the other end of the floor. Easley's four steals led the way individually for the Rams.
How It Happened
After falling behind 14-7, Fordham went on a 9-0 run with 2:26 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Maysen Hill, to take a 16-14 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Fordham did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 16 points close to the basket.
The Rams could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 36-27.
Richmond continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 53-33 advantage before Fordham went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Wilson-Saltos, to trim its deficit to 53-38 with 4:20 to go in the third. Richmond countered and stretched its lead to 66-44 heading into the fourth. Fordham played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 17 points in the paint.
Fordham narrowed its deficit to 75-54 before going on a 7-0 run to shrink the deficit to 75-61 with 2:18 to go in the contest. Richmond responded and outscored the Rams the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 84-65. Fordham fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 21 points.
