BRONX, NY --The Fordham women's basketball team got a 15-point performance from the bench, but fell 78-49 to the Saint Joseph's (PA) Hawks at home Saturday.
Ugne Sirtautaite led the Rams (8-6, 0-3) with 12 points, while Ornella Niankan also tacked on eight points and Carryn Easley helped out with four points.
Anastasija Veljovic pulled down five offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up a number of second chance opportunities for Fordham, grabbing 17 boards as a team.
The Fordham defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 18 Saint Joseph's (PA) turnovers. Those takeaways turned into nine points on the other end of the floor. Emma Wilson-Saltos led the way individually for the Rams with two steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 5-2, Fordham went on a 5-0 run with 8:30 left in the first quarter to take a 7-5 lead. Saint Joseph's (PA) then responded to tie things up at 13-13 heading into the second quarter. Fordham did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 13 points close to the basket.
The Hawks then took control in the second quarter and the Rams entered haltime behind 34-23.
Saint Joseph's (PA) continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 42-27 advantage before Fordham went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Maysen Hill, to trim its deficit to 42-33 with 5:34 to go in the third. Saint Joseph's (PA) countered and stretched its lead to 62-37 heading into the fourth. Fordham knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 14 total points.
Fordham could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 78-49. Fordham took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its 12 points in the paint.
