Fordham Falls at VCU 69-58

RICHMOND, VA - The Fordham women's basketball team got a 21-point performance from the bench, but fell 69-58 to the VCU Rams on the road Wednesday.

The Rams (9-12, 1-9) had two players score in double figures, led by Lakresha Edwards, who had 15 points. Carryn Easley tacked on 11 points and two steals and Kaila Berry added seven points, six rebounds and two steals.

Precious Omoshola pulled down seven offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Fordham, grabbing 17 boards and turning them into 11 second chance points.

The Fordham defense caused its share of mistakes in Wednesday's game, forcing 15 VCU turnovers while committing 14. Those takeaways turned into 10 points on the offensive end of the floor. Berry's two steals led the way individually for the Rams.

How It Happened

Fordham struggled out of the gate, falling behind 19-7 at the end of the first quarter.

VCU kept adding to that lead, building a 26-9 advantage before Fordham went on a 7-0 run to narrow its deficit to 26-16. VCU responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Rams trailing 38-25 heading into halftime.

After intermission, Fordham cut its deficit to 44-32 before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Alexis Black, to trim its deficit to 44-38 with 1:39 to go in the third. The Rams were unable to cut further into the deficit, but did not cede ground to VCU either and entered the fourth quarter trailing 48-42. Fordham played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 17 points in the paint.

VCU kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 60-49 advantage before Fordham went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Berry's layup, to shrink the deficit to 60-54 with 3:55 to go in the contest. VCU responded and outscored the Rams the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 69-58. Fordham took advantage of three VCU turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of those takeaways.
