BRONX, NY --The Fordham women's basketball team got a 23-point performance from the bench, but fell 61-47 to the Rhode Island Rams at home Saturday.
The Rams (9-13, 1-10) had two players score in double figures, led by Alexis Black, who had 14 points. Ugne Sirtautaite tacked on 12 points off of the bench and Kaila Berry added two points and 11 rebounds.
Led by Sirtautaite's three offensive rebounds, Fordham did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in four second chance points.
Fordham's defense held Rhode Island to only 34.5 percent shooting from the field. The Rams also limited Albina Syla to 3-of-12 shooting and eight points in the game.
How It Happened
Fordham struggled out of the gate, falling behind 13-4 at the end of the first quarter.
The Rams started much stronger in the second quarter, drawing to within four, before continuing to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 29-16 halftime deficit.
Following halftime, Fordham kept the Rams from growing their lead before going on a 6-0 run to trim its deficit to 36-29 with 2:45 to go in the third. Rhode Island countered and stretched its lead to 44-32 heading into the fourth. Fordham took advantage of five Rhode Island turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of takeaways.
Rhode Island kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 51-38 advantage before Fordham went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Black's three, to shrink the deficit to 51-43 with 4:20 to go in the contest. Rhode Island responded and outscored the Rams the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 61-47. Fordham took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 15 points in the paint.
