Bronx, N.Y. – Though the final score makes it seem like a comfortable win it was anything but for the Fordham University men's tennis team who battled George Mason University on Friday at the Cary Leeds Center, eventually upending the Patriots, 4-0.
Fordham opened the match by taking the doubles point, winning both of the completed doubles matches.
Will Lokier and
Nicolas Garnier started things off with a 6-3 win at third doubles over George Mason's Niza Simunyola and Shari Saeed before
Dhananjay Athreya and
Dhillon Virdee-Oakley teamed up to take first doubles from Ekansh Kumar and Monil Lotlikar, 6-1
The Rams then took the first three completed singles matches for the first win over George Mason in six tries. Lokier got the ball rolling with a 6-1, 6-2, win over Simunyola at fourth singles before
Filip Horak gave the Rams a 3-0 lead with a win over Lotlikar at the second position, 6-3, 6-4. Virdee-Oakley took the first set at first singles from Ekansh Kumar, 6-1, before dropping the second, 7-5. He then came back to take the third and clinch the win for the Rams, 6-4.
