Bronx, N.Y. – After a week in Florida, the Fordham University men's tennis team made a victorious return to the Bronx, shutting out Stonehill College, 7-0, on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts on Sunday.
"A total team effort today," said head coach
David Slater. "Dhillon and Filip battled back after dropping a set to win at first and second singles. We are approaching every match going forward as a conference match as we gear up for Atlantic 10 play."
Fordham opened the match by taking the doubles point, winning two of the three doubles matches. 3.
Will Lokier and
Nicolas Garnier started things off with a 6-1 win at third doubles over Stonehill's Guillaume de Benaze and Javier Guitierrez before
Dhananjay Athreya and
Dhillon Virdee-Oakley teamed up to take first doubles from Mark Kroll and Jacob Krefting, 6-3.
The Rams then took all six singles matches, four in straight sets. Lokier got the ball rolling with a 6-0, 6-2, win over Nicolas Arredondo at third singles before
Jeremy Victoria gave the Rams a 3-0 lead with a win over Mateo Mallen at the sixth position, 6-3, 6-2.
Andro Barrientos and
Ruben Russwurm closed out their matches within seconds of each other with Barrientos defeating Javier Guitierrez at fifth singles,6-0, 7-5, and Russwurm taking care of Mark Kroll at the fourth spot, 7-5, 6-0.
Virdee-Oakley and
Filip Horak needed a third set at first and second singles, receptively, with Virdee-Oakley taking the first set from Guillermo Bennaton, 6-2, before dropping the second, 6-4. But Virdee-Oakley came back to take the third, 7-5. Horak dropped the first set at second singles to Jacob Krefting, 7-6(4), but battled back to win the second 6-4, and the tiebreaker, 10-6.
