Women’s Tennis Takes Down VCU, 4-2

Paola Ueno Dalmonico clinches match for Fordham with win at fifth singles

Richmond, Va. – The Fordham women's tennis squad closed out their Spring Break trip with its second straight win over an Atlantic 10 opponent, defeating VCU today, 4-2, at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.

"Today was a battle!," exclaimed head coach Michael Sowter. "VCU came out strong and we lost the first set on four courts but we hung around, kept fighting, and pulled out a gritty win. A-10 wins are always a little sweeter and this was a nice way to wrap up a successful spring break trip."

Fordham opened the match taking the doubles point, winning two of the three doubles matches. Fordham's Paola Ueno Dalmonico and Catalina Padilla Udaeta started things with a 6-1 win over VCU's Andrea Magallanes and Yelizaveta Karlova at third doubles before VCU won at the first position. But  Lorraine Bergmann and Lily Chitambar clinched the doubles point for Fordham with a 7-5 win at second doubles over Sofia Jane Thorne and Lea Malazdra.

After VCU took a 2-1 with wins at second and third singles, Fordham took fourth, first, and fifth singles. Chitambar tied the match at two with a straight set win over Magallanes at fourth singles, 6-4, 6-3, before Nevena Kolarevic made it 3-2 for Fordham with a win at first singles. Kolarevic dropped the first set to VCU's T. Andrade Sabando, 6-1, but battled back to take the second, 6-2, and the third, 6-3. Paola Ueno Dalmonico then won the match for Fordham with a win over Lea Malazdra at fifth singles. Like Kolarevic, Dalmonico dropped the first set, 6-3, but came back to take the second, 6-4, and the third, 6-0.
