Softball Splits Saturday Doubleheader in Saint Louis

The Rams took game two 6-1, bashing a pair of home runs in the fourth inning

SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – Closing the weekend with a 6-1 victory over Saint Louis, Fordham University Softball split a doubleheader with the Billikens Saturday afternoon.

Taking a 6-0 lead through four innings of game one, Saint Louis kept Fordham off the board the entire way, allowing just four hits to the Rams to start the day.

Trading a pair of runs in the first inning of game two, the Maroon and White then rattled off a pair of home runs in the third to break open a four-run lead. Adding one final insurance run in the seventh, Fordham held off the Billikens in the seventh to snatch the series finale, 6-1.

The Rams now sit at 12-16 just past the midway point of the regular season, 4-2 in A-10 play. Kate McGuire and Nicki Sudall tallied three hits apiece to pace the Rams, including at least one in each game, while Sophie Nesturrick led the way with three RBI on a three-run blast in game two, totaling a pair of hits on the day.

Sudall and Eva Koratsis drove in a run in game two as well, along with Morgan Volgraf, while six different Rams tallied a run in the victory. Holly Beeman picked up the win in game two, improving to 6-3 on the year, throwing a full seven innings, giving up just four hits while striking out four Billikens.

Game 1: Saint Louis 6, Fordham 0

Neither side tallied a run in the opening frame, but it was the Billikens who tacked on two runs apiece in the second, third, and fourth innings to slowly pull ahead 6-0. Coming on in relief, Elizabeth Gaisior shut down the Billikens in the final two frames, with Fordham being outlasted into the seventh, not without their fair share of base runners scattering four hits in the opener, as well as drawing seven walks.

Game 2: Fordham 6, Saint Louis 1

Spreading 12 hits across game two, Fordham opened their scoring with a RBI groundout by Eva Koratsis in the first, but it was a quick answer in the bottom of the frame by Saint Louis, who drilled a solo home run to level the score at one. Fordham put itself back in front in the third, beginning with a solo homer from Nicki Sudall to leadoff the inning.

The Rams then put a pair of runners on, ahead of a three run home run by Sophie Nesturrick, the first of her collegiate career, to put the visitors ahead, 5-1. With a runner on and two out in the seventh, Morgan Volgraf knocked in one more run for the Maroon and White before Holly Beeman shut down the Billikens in the seventh for her eighth complete game in 10 outings this season.
