QUEENS, N.Y. – Launching a pair of long-balls Wednesday afternoon, Fordham University Softball saw Sydney Wells steal the show as the Rams defeated St. John's, 4-1.
The Rams rode the bat of Wells all afternoon, who rattled off three of Fordham's four hits in the afternoon, launching a pair of home runs, and coming just a few feet shy of a third, lacing a two-run double off the right field wall as well. Eva Koratsis tallied the other hit for the Maroon and White, while Olivia Simcoe picked up a win in the circle, tossing a full seven innings, allowing just one run while striking out three.
Using the old adage 'a bloop and a blast' the Rams placed Neleh Nogay on first who opened the day with a leadoff walk, before Wells cranked a two-run home run to put Fordham in front, 2-0. The lineup flipped back to the top in the third inning, where Nogay reached on an error, before Wells blasted a no-doubter over the wall in left-center to double the Fordham lead.
Simcoe dominated throughout, tossing 5.1 scoreless innings before St. John's tallied its only run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth.
Wells nearly added a third home run in the sixth, sending one into left-center that dropped just below the top of the fence, giving her a third extra-base hit on the day, before the Rams shut down the Red Storm in the seventh, to claim their third straight win against an Empire State foe in New York, after defeating Iona and Hofstra earlier in the year.
The Rams continue a stretch of games against New York rivals, opening a seven-game homestand Saturday with a doubleheader against St. Bonaventure at 12:00 p.m.
