Williamsburg, Va. – The Fordham women's tennis squad opened its Spring Break trip to Virginia with a 4-3 loss to William & Mary at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center on Wednesday.
"The ladies battled all day long against a very strong William & Mary squad," said head coach
Michael Sowter. "Both Lorraine and Catalina fought back after being down in the first and Nevena beat one of the best players in the CAA. A tough loss but great preparation for our next two A-10 opponents."
Fordham opened the match dropping the doubles point and William & Mary took two of the three doubles matches.
Julianne Nguyen and
Nevena Kolarevic won at first doubles for the Rams over Ine Stange and Hedda Gurholt, 6-3, but Fordham fell at second doubles. So the doubles point came down to third doubles where Fordham's
Paola Ueno Dalmonico and
Catalina Padilla Udaeta took William & Mary's Mira Kernagis and Emma Fernald to a tiebreaker before falling, (7-3).
The Rams picked up wins at first, third, and sixth singles. Kolarevic worked overtime at first singles before defeating Gurholt, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 7-6 (9-7), while Bergmann won in straight sets at the third position over Sia Chaudry, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
Catalina Padilla Udaeta earned the other Fordham points, needing a third set to defeat Kernagis at sixth singles, 7-6 (7-2), 1-6, 10-2
