Bronx, N.Y. – The Fordham University men's tennis team played its first outdoor match of the spring today and came away with its third straight win, defeating Hofstra University, 4-3, on the Hofstra Tennis Courts.
"It was a great team effort today," said head coach
David Slater. "It's probably our best effort so far this season. The top three singles players took care of business and third doubles battled back to secure the doubles point."
Fordham opened the match by taking the doubles point, winning two of the three doubles matches.
Phillip Uhde and
Filip Horak opened the match with a 6-1 win over Hofstra's Vincent Turina and Kaita Odani at second doubles but the Pride managed to win at first doubles so the doubles point came down to the third position where
Nicolas Garnier and
Will Lokier batted back to defeat Hofstra's Josh Reynolds and Matthew Garcia, 7-5.
After Hofstra tied the match at one by winning at fourth singles, Lokier put the Rams up 2-1 with a 6-4, 6-3 win at third singles over Maxim Michaels.
A Pride win at fifth singles tied the match again but the Rams won the next two completed matches to clinch the win. Horak made it 3-1 for Fordham with a 6-3, 6-3, win at second singles over Enaut Garcia (HOF) 6-3, 6-3, and
Dhillon Virdee-Oakley made it 4-2 when he defeated Josh Reynolds 6-2, 7-6(6), at first singles.
