The Rams (10-12, 2-7 A-10) enter the week having won two of their last three. Fordham claimed back-to-back contests against Duquesne on Jan. 26 and La Salle on Jan. 29 before a colossal comeback effort fell just short at St. Bonaventure on Saturday afternoon. The Rams trailed by as many as 16 midway through the first half before battling to even the score at 68 a side with 2:34 to play. Fordham had a chance to win in the final seconds following a missed Bonnies free throw, but
Japhet Medor's halfcourt heave just missed after the senior guard withstood considerable contact in the back court.
Medor scored 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting in Olean, including a 4-of-7 effort from beyond the arc. The graduate student guard has reached double figures in all but one A-10 outing and is averaging 17.6 points over his last eight games.
At St. Bonaventure,
Jackie Johnson III led the way with 20 points, his 10th outing of the season with 20 or more. The senior guard from Wichita, Kan., has reached double figures in 21 of his 22 appearances with the Rams after transferring from UNLV, where he failed to reach 20 points in 59 career games with the Runnin' Rebels.
Joshua Rivera was the third Ram in double figures against the Bonnies, posting 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting and sinking two of his three tries from 3-point range. The junior forward has scored 11 or more in each of his last five outings and is 9-of-19 (47.4%) from beyond the arc over his last six games.
The Rhode Island Rams head to the Bronx with a record of 15-6, 4-5 in the league, after taking down UMass, 88-82, at home on Wednesday night. Rhody is just 1-3 on the road in conference play with its lone win coming in overtime at Richmond on Jan. 11.
Senior guard Sebastian Thomas leads Rhode Island in just about every statistical category, averaging team highs of 19.0 points, 5.8 assists and 2.2 steals per game. The UAlbany transfer has gotten to the free throw line 144 times in 19 games, the second-highest average in the A-10.
Senior forward David Green averages 14.5 points per game while classmate Jaden House adds 11.8 per contest.
On the season, Rhode Island boasts the A-10's top scoring offense, averaging 78.9 points per game. In conference play, however, the Rams are scoring just 69.9 points per outing, a total that ranks ninth in the league.
Fordham and Rhode Island will meet for the 75
th time in a series that dates back to 1942. Rhody owns a 42-32 all-time edge in the series, but Fordham has won three of the last five contests between the two teams.
