Manchester, Conn. – The Fordham University men's tennis team continued its spring schedule, traveling to Fairfield on Sunday where the Rams were edged by the Stags, 4-3.
Fordham opened the match by dropping the doubles point, losing two of the three doubles matches.
Phillip Uhde and
Filip Horak picked up a win for Fordham at second double over Alex Aguiar and Andrew Immink, 6-3, before
Nicolas Garnier and
Will Lokier fell at the third position to Luca Benaibbouche and Will O'Brien, 6-4. The doubles point came down to first doubles where
Dhillon Virdee-Oakley and
Dhananjay Athreya gave Fairfield's Kostas Kollias and Kacper Krolikowski all they could handle before falling, 7-5.
The Rams picked up three points with singles wins at the first, second, and third positions. Virdee-Oakley
(FOR) defeated Krolikowski at first singles, 6-3, 7-5, and Horak bested Kollias at third singles, 7-5, 6-3. At second singles, Athreya took the first set from Calum Jessett, 6-4, before dropping the second, 7-6(1). Athreya then won the third set, 6-0.
Fairfield won at fifth and sixth singles which meant the match came down to fourth singles. Lokier dropped the first set to Benaibbouche, 6-3, but battled back to take the second, 7-5, forcing a third and deciding set which went to a tiebreaker with Benaibbouche squeaking out a 7-6(3) win.
