Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Black scores 30 points in Fordham's 82-78 loss to NJIT

BRONX, NY --Alexis Black scored a career high 30 points, stealing the show for the second game in a row, but the Fordham women's basketball team fell to the NJIT Highlanders 82-78 at home Friday.

The Rams (1-1) had two players score in double figures, led by Black, who had 30 points and two steals. Emma Wilson-Saltos tacked on 11 points off of the bench and Kaila Berry added eight points, seven rebounds and three steals.

Paced by Ugne Sirtautaite's four offensive rebounds, Fordham did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 16 boards that resulted in 18 second chance points.

The Fordham defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Friday's game, forcing 21 NJIT turnovers while committing 20. Those takeaways turned into 28 points on the other end of the floor. Berry's three steals led the way individually for the Rams.

How It Happened

After falling behind 5-2, Fordham went on a 6-0 run with 7:07 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Ornella Niankan, to take an 8-5 lead. The Rams then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with an 18-16 advantage. Fordham did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 18 of its 18 points close to the basket.

The Rams could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 42-28.

After intermission, Fordham cut its deficit to 57-45 before going on a 6-0 run to trim its deficit to 57-51 with 35 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Fordham's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled seven of the team's 23 third-quarter points.

NJIT kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 75-64 advantage before Fordham went on a 10-0 run to shrink the deficit to 75-74 with 1:23 to go in the contest. NJIT responded and outscored the Rams the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 82-78. Fordham took advantage of eight NJIT turnovers in the quarter, scoring 15 points off of those takeaways.
