Second Half Surge Sends Rams Past Saint Peter's

The Rams outscored the Peacocks 39-24 in the second half

BRONX, NY --The Fordham women's basketball team went into the half tied with Saint Peter's 31-31, but took control in the final 20 minutes to beat the Peacocks 70-56 at home Monday.

The Rams (2-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Alexis Black for the third game in a row, who had 20 points and five assists. Ugne Sirtautaite added 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench while Carryn Easley helped out with 10 points and three steals off the bench as well.

Fordham utilized fantastic ball movement in Monday's game, piling up 15 assists on 27 made field goals. Black's five assists were the most for the Rams.

The Fordham defense held Saint Peter's shooters to just 35.4 percent from the field, including 25 percent from three-point range. The Peacocks did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only nine offensive rebounds and scored nine second chance points.

How It Happened

After falling behind 5-2, Fordham went on an 8-0 run with 6:36 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Precious Omoshola, to take a 10-5 lead. The Rams then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 14-12 advantage. Fordham relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down a pair of shots from beyond the arc to account for six of its 14 points.

The Rams surrendered their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime with the score tied 31-31. Fordham dominated in the paint, scoring 10 of its 17 points close to the basket.

The two teams each put up 19 points in the third quarter, leaving the game tied at 50-50 heading to the fourth. Fordham turned nine offensive rebounds into nine second chance points on the way to scoring 19 total points in the quarter.

Fordham started the fourth with a bang, going on a 13-0 run, finished off by Easley's jumper, to seize a 63-50 lead with 3:00 to go in the contest. The Rams kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 70-56 win. Fordham took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 20 points in the paint.
