BRONX, NY -- Alexis Black and Ornella Niankan combined to score 36 points Wednesday night as the Fordham Rams defeated Stony Brook 58-52 at home to close their opening homestand of the campaign with a 3-1 record.
The Rams had two players score in double figures, led by Black, who had 20 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals, and made her mark at the charity stripe, drawing 17 free throws while nailing 12 of them for her third straight game with 20 or more points. Niankan tacked on 16 points and eight rebounds from the bench and Emma Wilson-Saltos added six points and 10 rebounds.
Fordham out-rebounded Stony Brook 45-33 in Wednesday's game, led by Wilson-Saltos' 10 boards. The Rams also grabbed 15 offensive rebounds and scored nine second chance points.
Fordham's defense held Stony Brook to only 17.6 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 29.1 percent from the field.
How It Happened
Fordham struggled out of the gate, falling behind 15-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The Rams fought back in the second period, using a strong 10 minutes on both ends of the floor to outscore the Seawolves 20-10, and narrow the deficit to 28-25 by the time halftime rolled around.
The Rams then outscored Stony Brook 15-10 in the third period to overtake the Seawolves and grab a 40-38 lead heading into quarter number four. Fordham played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint.
Fordham kept widening that lead, expanding it to 53-50 before going on a 5-0 run to grow the lead to 58-50 with 13 seconds to go in the contest. The Seawolves narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Rams still cruised the rest of the way for the 58-52 win. Fordham took advantage of six Stony Brook turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of those takeaways.
