BRONX, NY --The Fordham women's basketball team led by a 46-point performance from the bench Sunday, defeated LIUĀ 72-51 for their third straight win.
The Rams (6-3) had a season-high four players score in double figures, led by Ugne Sirtautaite, who had 12 points. Maysen Hill added 11 points off the bench and Alexis Black chipped in as well with 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Led by Ornella Niankan's four offensive rebounds, Fordham did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 18 boards that resulted in 12 second chance points.
Fordham's defense held LIU to only 29.4 percent shooting from the field. The Sharks did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with nine offensive rebounds and managed three second chance points while Fordham cleared 28 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 15-14 advantage, Fordham went on a 7-0 run with 1:46 left in the first quarter to increase its lead to 22-14. The Rams then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 22-16 advantage. Fordham got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for seven of its 22 total points.
LIU rallied to take a 32-27 lead before Fordham went on a 6-0 run starting at the 3:17 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Anastasija Veljovic, to take a 33-32 lead. The Rams proceeded to tack on two points to that lead and enjoyed a 39-36 advantage heading into halftime. Fordham dominated in the paint, scoring 10 of its 17 points close to the basket.
Following intermission, Fordham continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 46-40 before going on a 9-0 run to expand its lead further to 55-40 with seven seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Fordham took advantage of eight LIU turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of takeaways.
Fordham kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Precious Omoshola's layup, to grow the lead to 72-51 with 37 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Fordham took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 17 points in the paint.
