NIAGARA FALLS, NY --The Fordham women's basketball team held Niagara to just 14.3 percent from deep in a 2-for-14 shooting performance on the way to a 70-47 win against the Purple Eagles on the road Wednesday.
The Rams (5-3) had two players score in double figures, led by Alexis Black, who had 18 points and four steals. Ornella Niankan notched her first career double-double with 13 points and a career-best 10 rebounds and Emma Wilson-Saltos added eight points, eight rebounds and two steals.
Led by Niankan's six offensive rebounds, Fordham did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 23 boards that resulted in 25 second chance points.
Fordham's defense held Niagara to only 14.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 25 percent from the field.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 7-4 advantage, Fordham went on an 8-0 run with 4:13 left in the first quarter to increase its lead to 15-4. The Rams then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 17-7 advantage. Fordham did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 17 points close to the basket.
The Rams maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 29-19 edge. Fordham dominated in the paint, scoring six of its 12 points close to the basket.
Fordham wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a three from Black, to expand its lead further to 36-19 with 5:50 to go in the third. The Rams held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 46-29 edge. Fordham played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 17 points in the paint.
Fordham kept widening that lead, expanding it to 49-31 before going on a 10-0 run to grow the lead to 59-31 with 6:48 to go in the contest. The Purple Eagles narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Rams still cruised the rest of the way for the 70-47 win. Fordham took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 24 points in the paint.
