BRONX, NY --The Fordham women's basketball team got a 23-point showing from the bench Sunday afternoon on the way to a 65-62 win against the Manhattan in the Battle of the Bronx at the Rose Hill Gym.
The Rams (4-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Alexis Black, who had 20 points, seven assists, four rebounds, and four steals. Ugne Sirtautaite added 11 points from the bench and Ornella Niankan chipped in as well with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Niankan pulled down three offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Fordham, grabbing 11 boards and turning them into six second chance points.
The Fordham defense caused its share of mistakes in Sunday's game, forcing 22 Manhattan turnovers while committing 17. Those takeaways turned into 20 points on the other end of the floor. Black's four steals led the way individually for the Rams.
How It Happened
After falling behind 15-11, Fordham went on a 7-0 run with 3:03 left in the first quarter to take an 18-15 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Fordham did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 18 points close to the basket.
Fordham kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 9-0 run starting at the 6:26 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Sirtautaite, to increase its lead to 34-22. The Jaspers cut into that lead, but the Rams still enjoyed a 40-33 advantage heading into halftime. Fordham dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 22 points close to the basket.
Fordham continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Sirtautaite, to expand its lead further to 49-37 with 5:49 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Jaspers had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Rams still entered the fourth quarter with a 55-47 edge. Fordham played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 15 points in the paint.
The Rams then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Fordham took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 10 points in the paint.
