University Park, Pa. – The Fordham University men's tennis team traveled to central Pennsylvania where the Rams were shutout by Penn State, 7-0, on Saturday.
"Penn State is probably the toughest team we will play all year," said head coach
David Slater. "Always positives to take away from the match as DJ (
Dhananjay Athreya) played very well, being a couple of points away from winning at second singles."
Fordham opened the match by dropping all three doubles matches.
Nicolas Garnier and
Andro Barrientos started the match with a 6-1 loss at third doubles to Penn State's Reiya Hattori and Marcus Schoeman and the Nitanny Lions then clinched the point when Sam Bossem and Loren Byers defeated Fordham's
Phillip Uhde and
Filip Horak, 6-3, at second doubles. Charles Morgan and David Lindsay completed the sweep for Penn State with a 6-2 win over
Dhillon Virdee-Oakley and
Dhananjay Athreya at the first position.
The Nittany Lions then took all six singles matches. The closest the Rams got to earning a point was second singles
where Athreya took the first set from Schoeman, 7-5, but dropped the second, 6-2, and the tiebreaker, 10-8.
