Matt Sloan Returns to Fordham as Assistant Coach

Former Rams standout rejoins staff at Rose Hill

BRONX, N.Y. – A former all-conference and all-region selection during his time as a men's soccer standout at Fordham, Matt Sloan has returned to Rose Hill as an assistant coach.

"We are excited for Matt to rejoin the program," said Carlo Acquista, who is entering his sixth season leading the program.  "He left a big mark here as a player, helping the group earn an NCAA bid. Matt's experience, character, energy, and enthusiasm make him a great fit for our staff."

Sloan will replace former St. Francis Brooklyn head coach Tom Giovatto, who spent the 2023 campaign with Fordham before being named the women's soccer head coach at LIU.

"I am incredibly excited to be back at my alma mater as an assistant coach," said Sloan. "I am really looking forward to working with Coach Acquista and Coach Bannister again and hope to bring the Atlantic 10 trophy back to Rose Hill."

Sloan comes home to the Bronx after spending the 2023 season as the head coach at Molloy University, a Division II program on Long Island, where he was the youngest men's soccer head coach in the country.  Sloan took the job in Rockville Centre after serving as a volunteer assistant coach with the Rams in 2022, a season that saw three Rams earn All-Atlantic 10 honors, highlighted by Timo Hummrich garnering First Team All-Atlantic 10 accolades.

Sloan's coaching tenure started immediately after his collegiate playing career came to a close.  Sloan joined the Rams in 2020-21 and promptly anchored the team to an Atlantic 10 title. He earned Most Outstanding Player honors at the conference championship after scoring two goals in as many games to give the Rams their fourth A-10 title in program history.  He also earned First Team All-Region accolades from United Soccer Coaches that spring after topping the team with four goals and nine points.  The following fall, Sloan started 14 of his 17 appearances, tying for the team lead with four goals and adding three assists for 11 points.  For his efforts, Sloan was rewarded with a spot on the All-Atlantic 10 Second Team.

A 2020 graduate of American University, Sloan appeared in 46 games over three seasons in Washington, D.C., thrice earning selection to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
A native of Hicksville, N.Y., Sloan was a two-time Nassau County Player of the Year and a 2016 United Soccer Coaches All-American at Hicksville High School.
