Men’s Soccer Thrills Fans with Last Minute Game-Winner

Elias Betancourt scores with minute left as Rams stay unbeaten in A10 play

Bronx, N.Y. – The Fordham squad entered tonight's Atlantic 10 matchup with Saint Louis University shorthanded due to injuries and a red card from the last game. So when the Billikens scored with about 30 minutes remaining Fordham fans feared the worst. But Fordham's Elias Betancourt, who hadn't scored a goal so far this season, played the final 17 minutes with what looked like a giant "S" on the front of his jersey instead of Fordham. The senior played Superman for the Rams tonight, scoring the tying goal in the 73rd minute and then the game-winner with a minute remaining as Fordham defeated Saint Louis, 2-1, at Moglia Stadium in a matchup of the top two teams in the league.

With the win, Fordham improves to 5-4-2 overall, 3-0-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Louis, the defending A10 champions, falls to 4-4-3 overall, 2-1-1 in the conference.

After the Billikens took the 1-0 lead in the 60th minute the Rams got offensive and finally broke through with Betancourt's first tally of the night. On the play, Marco Cantalapiedra dribbled down the left side before sending a cross into the box where Marc-Alexandre Happi Emaga flicked it to Betancourt who one-timed it from ten yards past the Saint Louis keeper.

While most in attendance would have been happy with a tie, Betancourt wasn't. With just over a minute left Kamran Mojabi had a long throw-in that went to Betancourt as his defender fell down. Betancourt wasted little time taking advantage of the defensive miscue and blasted a shot to the top left corner for the game-winner.
