Bronx, N.Y. - The weather was perfect for tennis today as the Fordham University men's tennis squad hosted Sacred Heart University on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts. And the two teams took advantage of the weather to play a three hour-plus match with the visiting Pioneers squeezing out a 4-3 win.
Fordham opened the match by taking the doubles point, winning two of the three doubles matches.
John Mascone and
Giorgio Soemarno got things started with a 6-2 win over Matayas Vencl and Darius Eftrkhar at second doubles before
Nicholas Kanazirev and
Dhillon Virdee-Oakley defeated Lefteri Apostolou and Enrique Laennec-Baffrey, 6-4, at the first position.
After Sacred Heart tied the match at 1-1 by winning at fifth singles, Virdee-Oakley put Fordham up 2-1 with a 6-4, 7-6(2) win over Laennec-Baffrey at third singles. But the Pioneers took second and first singles, in that order, to take a 3-1 lead and clinched the match when Eftrkhar defeated Stojanovic at the sixth spot, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
Mascone earned the final point of the match with a 6-4, 7-6(4), 10-7, win over Hernandez at fourth singles.
