Men’s Tennis Falls to Queens, 4-3

Bronx, N.Y. – While the weather was a bit cooler today than yesterday, unfortunately the results were the same for the Fordham University men's tennis squad as the Rams dropped their second straight match by a 4-3 score, falling to Queens College on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts.
 
"I'm very proud of the way the guys fought today," said head coach David Slater. "You can't get much closer to winning the match than we did today."
 
Fordham opened the match by taking the doubles point, winning two of the three doubles matches. John Mascone and Giorgio Soemarno got things started with a 6-3 win over Omar El Shehawey and Lucas Foix Sotos at second doubles before Nicholas Kanazirev and Dhillon Virdee-Oakley defeated Roni Rikkonen and Cameron Henricy, 6-4, at the first position.

Queens tied the match at 1-1 by winning at third singles but a 6-1, 6-3, win by Kanazirev over Roni Rikkonen at first singles gave the Rams a 2-1 lead.
 
After the Knights took a 3-2 lead with victories at fifth and sixth singles, Mascone evened things for the Rams with three-set win at fourth singles, coming back after dropping the first set, 6-4, to win the second, 6-3, and the third, 6-1.
 
The match came down to second singles where Soemarno took the first set from Henricy, 6-3, but lost the second, 6-1, and the third, 7-5.
