Bronx, N.Y. – (April 6, 2024) – After a stellar pitching effort on Friday, the Fordham baseball team put the offense on center stage on Saturday, posting 12 runs on 12 hits in a 12-2 win over the Richmond Spiders at Houlihan Park.
With the win, Fordham improved to 11-18 on the year, 3-2 in the Atlantic 10, while Richmond fell to 12-18 on the year, 2-3 in the league.
Fordham got the ball rolling early, scoring four times in the first inning. The Rams loaded the bases with no outs and picked up a run on an RBI-single by
Steve Luttazi, two on a Richmond error, and one on a ground out by
Cian Sahler.
Andrew Kanellis made it 5-0 in favor of Fordham in the second, as he doubled home
Ryan Thiesse from first base after a single down the right field line.
Richmond scored twice in the third, but Fordham answered with a run in the bottom of the frame to make it, 6-2.
Jack Vallario recorded an RBI-single to right, scoring
T.J. Wachter, who reached on an error.
The Rams then put the game away in the seventh with a six-run rally for a 12-2 final. Sahler and
Daniel Bucciero each had a two-run single in the inning, while
Tommy McAndrews and
Chris Genaro both registered RBI-doubles.
Five Fordham pitchers combined for a six-hitter, as relievers
Brixton Lofgren,
Connor Haywood,
Gannon Brady, and
Dominic Cunha posted six scoreless innings of relief. Lofgren (1-0) earned his first collegiate win, as he allowed just two hits over three scoreless innings in relief of starter
Aidan Dowd. Haywood, Brady, and Cunha each had one scoreless inning to close out the game.
At the plate,
Ryan Thiesse was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a stolen base, while Sahler drove in three runs. Kanellis finished 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI with Genaro being 2-for-3 with an RBI-double and a run scored.
Fordham goes for the series sweep in game three on Sunday with game time set for noon.
