BRONX, N.Y. – Fordham Men's Basketball Head Coach
Keith Urgo has landed the program's first transfer commitment of the spring, as New York native Matt Zona has announced his intention to join the Rams for the 2024-25 campaign.
"We're so excited to welcome Matt and his family to Rose Thrill," said Urgo. "I've known Matt since his high school days at Bergen Catholic and he embodies everything we want our Fordham program to be. He's relentless, he's a leader and he's a terrific student. We can't wait to see the impact he will have on every facet of our program."
Zona, a 6-foot-9 forward from Blauvelt, spent the last four seasons at Notre Dame, where appeared in 75 games with seven starts. This past year, Zona enjoyed his most productive campaign in South Bend, averaging 2.3 points and 2.3 rebounds in 11.2 minutes per contest. He shot 43.3 percent from the floor, including a 31.7 percent clip from beyond the arc. Zona appeared in all 33 of the team's games with six starts and compiled a 2.1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Last month, Zona played a key role in the Irish's opening round ACC Tournament win over Georgia Tech, scoring a season-high seven points on 3-of-4 shooting in only seven minutes of action. He also poured in seven points during a 20-point win over UMES in November.
As a junior, Zona appeared in 20 games, averaging 1.7 points on 50.0% shooting. He averaged 9.5 points in his final two appearances, scoring a career-high 10 points at Clemson before connecting on a trio of triples against Virginia Tech in the ACC Tournament.
Prior to his time in South Bend, Zona was a scholastic standout at Bergen Catholic, where he teamed up for two years with current Fordham sophomore
Will Richardson. A three-star recruit and the no. 11 prospect in the state of New Jersey, Zona was named the 2019-20 North Jersey Player of the Year after averaging 14.8 points, 11.4 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game. He logged 1,237 points over the course of his career at Bergen Catholic, good enough for second in school history at the time of his graduation.  A three-time First Team All-Bergen County honoree, Zona played with NJ Shoreshots on the grassroots circuit.
Zona's father, Michael, was a two-sport standout at Iona, playing baseball and basketball for the Gaels.
Zona holds two degrees from Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business: a bachelor's in management consulting and a master's in non-profit administration.
