Orlando, Fla. – The Fordham University men's tennis team closed out its spring break trip to Orlando the same way it started, with a win. On Monday it was a 5-2 win over DePauw University at the USTA National Campus.
"It was the toughest outdoor conditions we have played in so far. Warm Florida conditions but the wind was pretty extreme. Most of the team handled the challenge well," said head coach
David Slater. "There's still a lot of work to do but I like where the team is, and we are improving at the right time. All in all, a successful trip to Florida."
Fordham opened the match by taking the doubles point, winning two of the three doubles matches.
Giorgio Soemarno and
Nick Mueller took first doubles from Ryan McCook and Chase Hutchinson, 8-3, while
Dhillon Virdee-Oakley and
Nicholas Kanazirev were victorious at second doubles over Wils Warren and Teagen Crow, 8-6.
The Rams then put the match away by winning four of the six singles matches, three in straight sets. Mueller took first singles from Samuele Pia, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, while Virdee-Oakley defeated Ryan McCook, 6-2, 6-2 at the third spot, 6-2, 6-2.
John Mascone clinched the match for the Rams with a 6-3, 6-3, win at fourth singles over Jake Louiselle before Stojanovic closed out the Fordham scoring with a 6-4, 6-1, victory over Evan Uhl at the sixth spot.
