LA JOLLA, Calif. – Despite facing adverse weather conditions on Sunday afternoon at the Torrey Pines North Course, the Fordham golf team got off to a strong start at the UC San Diego Invitational, sitting in a tie for sixth in the 17-team field after 18 holes.
In the face of 25-30 mile-per-hour sustained winds, Fordham managed to finish in the top half of the field with all four scorers carding a 78 or better.
Yale, North Dakota State and Oklahoma Christian each hold a share of the 18-hole team lead at +5. Fordham is 11 shots back in a three-way tie for sixth with UC San Diego and Seattle (+16). Idaho's Matt McGann, Yale's Robert You and North Dakota State's Ian Simonich share the 18-hole individual lead at two under.
Jake Mrva paced the Rams, carding four birdies on his way to a one-over 73, good for a share of eighth out of 106 golfers on the individual leaderboard.
Felix Luetke Meyring played the par 5s in four under en route to a three-over 75, good for a share of 23rd. The freshman led the field with two eagles, carding threes on holes no. 5 and 17.
Playing as an individual, Mashu Nishi shot a 76 to grab a share of 37th place after 18 holes, highlighted by an even-par 36 on the North Course's outward nine.
Chris Konefal and A.J. DePaolo rounded out the Fordham scoring cohort with a pair of 78s (+6) to sit in a tie for 56th.
Tucker Silva carded an 80 while Brian Ruland, playing as an individual, turned in an 85.
Fordham will resume the UC San Diego Invitational on Monday with the tournament's second round beginning at 4 p.m. ET.
