Kanellis & McAndrews Drive in Runs in the Eighth

Bronx, N.Y. – (March 24, 2024) – It was a classic pitcher's duel on Sunday afternoon at Houlihan Park between the St. John's Red Storm and the Fordham Rams with the game at 0-0 into the bottom of the eighth inning.  The Rams then broke through with two runs in the bottom of the eighth and held the Red Storm to one in the ninth to take the 2-1 win and even this weekend's series at one game apiece.

The win moved Fordham to 8-14 on the season and snapped St. John's 13-game win streak.

The first part of the pitcher's duel belonged to Fordham's Koen Smith and Aric Berg.  Smith threw five shutout innings for the Rams, allowing four hits, while Berg allowed only two hits through his first three innings of relief.

On the other side, Kyle Chase opened with a scoreless inning for St. John's, followed by 4.1 innings of six-hit relief by Evan Chaffee and 1.2 scoreless innings from Louis Marinaro.

The scoring all came in the final at-bats for the two teams, starting with Fordham in the bottom of the eighth.  Matt Dieguez led off with a hit down the left field line and was able to avoid a tag at second base for a double.  After a strikeout and a foul out moved Dieguez to third, Andrew Kanellis looped an RBI-single into right field for the 1-0 lead.  Tommy McAndrews then lined a double over the left fielder's head to score Kanellis from first base and a 2-0 edge.

In the ninth, St. John's made it interesting against Berg, as with a runner at first and one out, Garrett Scavelli connected on an RBI-double to left center, scoring Aidan Cohall from first base.  After a ground out and a walk put runners at the corners with two outs, Berg got Ben Beauchamp to foul out to first base to end the game.

Berg (3-2) earned his third win of the season, allowing one run on three hits over four innings of relief with a career-high five strikeouts.  At the plate, Kanellis was 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored, while McAndrews was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI.

The rubber game of the series is set for Monday at 3:00 PM at Kaiser Stadium in Queens.
