Orlando, Fla. – The Fordham University men's tennis team started its spring break trip to Orlando with a 7-0 win over Union College at the USTA National Campus on Friday.
"There were tough windy conditions for the match but great practice to get used to outdoor tennis," said head coach
David Slater. "Some close matches in the end but everyone was able to close out their singles."
Fordham opened the match by taking the doubles point, winning all three doubles matches.
Giorgio Soemarno and
Nick Mueller took first doubles from Ben Jacobs and Dimitris Binopoulos, 8-0, while
Dhillon Virdee-Oakley and
Nicholas Kanazirev were victorious at second doubles over Austin Gregory and Keita Fukushima, 8-5.
John Mascone and
Stefan Stojanovic completed the sweep for the Rams with an 8-3 win at the third spot over Seth Prusko and Daniel Saxe.
The Rams then put the match away by sweeping all six singles matches, five in straight sets. Mueller took first singles from Jacobs, 6-2, 7-6(4), while Soemarno won at second singles over Binopoulos, 6-3, 7-6(4). Kanazirev took third singles from Fukushima, 6-4, 7-5, Virdee-Oakley defeated Saxe at the fourth spot, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, Chen was victorious at the fifth position over Prusko, 6-2, 6-1, and Stojanovic defeated Ton, 6-3, 6-2, at sixth singles.
