Bronx, N.Y. – (March 22, 2024) – St. John's Xavier Kolhosser threw seven shutout innings with five strikeouts to lead the Red Storm to a 9-0 win over the Fordham Rams on Friday at Kaiser Stadium.
Fordham (7-14) was primed to open the scoring in the first inning, loading the bases with one out on a walk to
Daniel Bucciero and singles by
Andrew Kanellis and
Tommy McAndrews. However, Kolhosser was able to get a fielder's choice out at the plate and a strikeout to keep the Rams off the scoreboard.
St. John's offense then rewarded Kolhosser with a 2-0 lead in the second inning, when Garrett Scavelli hit a two-run home run to left, his first of the season. The led extended to 3-0 in the fourth, as Jimmy Keenan cracked a solo home run to left center, his fifth of the year.
The Rams tried to answer those runs in the fifth, loading the bases for the second time in the game. Kolhosser though induced an inning-ending ground ball double play to keep it a 3-0 score.
The Red Storm continued to add to the lead, scoring once in the fifth, four times in the seventh, and once in the eighth for the 9-0 final.
Declan Lavelle (2-3) took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits over six innings of work with five strikeouts. At the plate, Kanellis finished 3-for-3 in the game, while
Nico Boza was 2-for-2.
Game two of the series is set for Sunday at 1:00 PM at Houlihan Park.
