Box Score Bronx, N.Y. – The Fordham men's tennis squad picked up its first win on Saturday night with a hard fought 4-3 win over Binghamton University at the Cary Leeds Center.
Jack Mascone, who sealed the late night win with the final singles victory said, "the team looks at this as a great invitation to work even harder".
The Rams opened the night taking the doubles point.
Nick Mueller and
Giorgio Soemarno got things started with a 6-3 win over Ronin Lotlikar and Kyle Weekes at first doubles and then, with doubles tied 1-1,
John Mascone and
Bingru Chen went an extra game to defeat James McPherson and Matt Carlson 7-5 at the third position.
Fordham then won the match by winning three of the six singles matches. Mueller took first singles from Lotlikar, dropping the first set, 7-5, before rallying back to take the next two by identical 6-2 scores.
Kanazirev was victorious at second singles over Weekes, winning the first set, 6-2, before losing the second, 7-6(5). But Kanazirev came back to win the third, 6-1.
With the match tied 3-3 it all came down to fourth singles where Mascone dropped the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6, but came back strong to win the second set, 6-2, and then clinched the match for the Rams with a 6-3 win in the third set.
