Winston-Salem, N.C – (February 17, 2024) – After the high drama of tying game on a home run in the eighth inning, the Fordham Rams gave up seven runs in the ninth inning, falling to the Akron Zips, 14-7, at David Couch Ballpark in Winston-Salem, N.C.
After spotting Akron a 4-0 lead, Fordham got on the board in the bottom of the third, netting three runs. The Rams loaded the bases and got a two-run single by
Steve Luttazi and an RBI-single by
Henry Pelinski.
Fordham then grabbed a 6-4 lead in the fourth with three more runs. Two of those three runs scored on an error, while the third came in on an RBI-single by
Tommy McAndrews.
Akron cut the deficit to 6-5 in the fourth and regained the lead in the top of the seventh on a two-run single from Jack Poist, giving the Zips a 7-6 edge.
Then in the eighth, Fordham tied the game at seven, when
Andrew Kanellis connected on a pinch-hit solo home run to left, his first as a Ram.
The game got away from Fordham in ninth, as Akron scored seven times to take home a 14-7 victory.
For Fordham,
Aric Berg took the loss, allowing seven runs on six hits on the mound. McAndrews was the lone multi-hit performance for the Rams, going 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Luttazi was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
Chris Genaro and
Ryan Thiesse were also each 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
The Rams conclude the weekend with a 10:00 AM game against Illinois on Sunday.
