Volleyball Falls to No. 20 Dayton Friday Night

The Rams nearly upended Flyers in set two

NEW YORK – Opening a three game stretch of matches at the Rose Hill Gym, Fordham University Volleyball fell to No. 20 Dayton Friday afternoon in straight sets.

Opening the match trading the first 16 points, eight a-side, Dayton would rattle off a quick run to pull away, and stopped a Fordham rally later in the frame, to pull away for what would be a 25-17 win in set one. A strong second set by the Maroon and White saw the home side take the lead early, going up as many as six points, and leading 14-9 midway through the period.

Dayton would creep back into the set late, battling back to take a 25-21 victory and prevent the Rams from being just the second team to steal a set from the Flyers in league play this season. The visitors would put their foot down in the third set, taking a commanding lead out of the gates, seeing out a 25-8 to sweep the match Friday night.

Lorenza Rosenkilde paced the offense with six kills, hitting .417 for the match, followed by five kills from Audrey Brown, while Emma Stammeyer dished out 10 assists, ahead of eight from Whitney Woodrow. Ryan Naumann would collect 15 digs ahead of 14 from Moody and nine apiece from Stammeyer and Zoe Talabong.

Playing the No. 20 ranked team in the nation, the Rams would draw nine ties and exchange the lead three times over the course of the opening frame. Fordham and Dayton would be tied through to eight all before the Flyers tried to break away with a quick run. Battling back on the home side, Dayton would be forced to call a timeout following a series of points by the Rams, but would maintain their lead, taking a 25-17 win.

Fordham would dominate out of the gates in set two, taking 10 of the first 14 points, their biggest lead of the night. As the Flyers continued to battle back, the Rams worked hard to hold off the opponents, leading through to 19-all, where Dayton pulled away to close out the frame and go up two sets to none. A lopsided third set saw the visitors take a big lead early on, cruising to a 25-8 win in the third to take the match in straight sets.

The Rams are back in action against Dayton tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 p.m. from the Rose Hill Gym and streaming on ESPN+.
