BRONX, N.Y. – The Fordham men's soccer team extended its Atlantic 10 unbeaten streak to four matches on Saturday night, taking down George Washington, 3-1, at Moglia Stadium.
With the win, Fordham's third in its last four games, the Rams improved to 6-3-4 on the season with a 3-1-2 mark in Atlantic 10 play.
Two of Fordham's three goals came off the right foot of Lukas Hackaa, who registered his third career brace at the Division I level. The graduate student from Stockholm logged a pair of two-goal games last season on his way to Horizon League Player of the Year honors at IUPUI.
Daniel D'Ippolito provided the Rams' other marker of the evening, scoring his second game winner and his ninth goal overall this season. His nine goals are tied for the most by a Ram since 2002 (Brian Borrhello, 11). The last Fordham player to score this many goals in a season was Jannik Loebe, who tallied nine goals in 23 games while leading the 2017 Rams to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
Graduate student Carter Abbott made two saves to pick up his sixth win of the season in goal.
Despite not scoring in the opening 45 minutes, Fordham held a discernible advantage from the beginning of the match. At the intermission, the Rams held an 8-5 advantage in shots and narrowly missed a pair of stellar scoring chances from Luke Pompliano in the 17th minute and Daniel D'Ippolito in the 19th minute.
Just four minutes into the second half, momentum swung decidedly in the Rams' favor when GW's Dan Dobrin was sent off with a red card for denying a goal-scoring opportunity with a foul. On the ensuing free kick, Hackaa scored the game's first goal by bending a ball into the upper-left hand corner of the cage from 21 yards out.
The Revolutionaries managed to level the match despite playing with only 10 men, as Louis Crofts scored his fourth of the year off an assist from William Turner in the 60th minute.
After a number of close calls, Fordham managed to break the deadlock in the 80th minute when Andre Insalaco drew a foul in the box, setting up a penalty kick for D'Ippolito. The junior captain was initially denied by GW goalkeeper Tom McAuley, but managed to bury the rebound and put the Rams ahead for good.
With just under two minutes to play, Hackaa added an insurance marker in authoritative fashion. Following a failed GW clearance, Hackaa picked up the ball inside midfield before advancing 20 yards and delivering a right-footed rocket into the right-side upper 90, sealing the match for Fordham.
Fordham, which moved into the top four of the Atlantic 10 standings with the win, will return to action at Moglia Stadium on Tuesday night when it welcomes Princeton for its non-conference finale. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
