St. Louis, Mo. – (May 19, 2023) – Saint Louis scored five times in the bottom of the eighth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run by Cam Redding, to rally from a 6-3 deficit to defeat the Fordham Rams, 8-6, at the Billiken Sports Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
Fordham opened the scoring in the second inning as
Peter DeMaria drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a single to left by
Zach Selinger.
Sebastian Mexico then snuck a single down the left field line to score DeMaria from second.
The Rams added to the lead in the third inning, thanks to some wildness from the Saint Louis pitching staff. A walk and two hit batsmen loaded the bases with one out, which was followed by Selinger being hit by a pitch to force in a run and a walk to
Cian Sahler to force in a second.
Saint Louis got on the board in the fourth on an RBI-single by Austin Neuweg, but Fordham got that run back in the sixth, making it a 4-1 score.
Ryan Thiesse reached on a single and moved to third on a hit-and-run by
Daniel Bucciero. Thiesse then scored on a sacrifice fly by
Tommy McAndrews.
The Billikens closed the gap to 4-3 in the seventh inning on a two-run home run by Cam Redding, his 11
th of the season.
Fordham answered back with two runs in the top of the eighth to regain a three-run advantage at 6-3.
Chris Genaro led off the inning with a solo home run to left center, his second of the season. Later in the frame, McAndrews recorded his second sacrifice fly of the game, plating Thiesse from third base.
The Billikens though had a final rally in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring five times for the 8-6 win. Redding tied the game with a three-run home run to left, while RBI-singles by Tyler Fogarty and Knox Preston gave Saint Louis the lead.
The late rally spoiled a solid effort by Fordham starting pitcher
Austin Sachen, who allowed only one run on four hits over five innings of work with four strikeouts.
At the plate, Thiesse was 2-for-4 with a stolen base and three runs scored, while Selinger went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
The same two teams will wrap up their series on Sunday with a noon game.
