Bronx, N.Y. – (May 13, 2023) – After being honored prior to the game, the Fordham baseball class of 2023 each seemed to have their moment in the sun on Saturday, leading the team to a 5-2 Atlantic 10 win over the Massachusetts Minutemen at Houlihan Park.
Senior
Will Findlay got things rolling for the Rams in the first inning, as he lined an RBI-single to center, scoring
Tommy McAndrews from second base.
After UMass knotting the game at one in the fourth on a bases loaded walk, senior
Zach Selinger quickly put Fordham back on top in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to left, his 11
th of the season.
The Rams then rallied for three runs in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 5-1.
Chris Genaro led off with a single and moved to second on a ground out.
Daniel Bucciero then laced an RBI-double down the right field line to score Genaro. McAndrews followed with an RBI-double of his own to right center to score Bucciero. After a ground out moved him to third, McAndrews later scored on a wild pitch.
The scoring after that inning was limited to just a solo home run by UMass' Will MacLean, his sixth of the season, for the 5-2 final score.
Fordham's
Austin Sachen,
Nate Scott, and senior
Ben Kovel allowed just two runs and scattered eight hits in the game. Scott (2-2) earned the win, allowing one run on three hits over 3.1 innings of relief of Sachen with two strikeouts. Sachen went the first 4.2 innings, giving up one run on five hits with six strikeouts. Kovel came on for a 1-2-3 ninth inning to record his eighth save of the year.
At the plate, Selinger was 2-for-4 with a home run, while Findlay was 2-for-4 with an RBI. McAndrews was also 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI.
The rubber game of the series is set for noon on Sunday.
