Kingston, R.I. – Fordham softball fell twice on Saturday at Rhode Island, 3-0 in game one and 6-5 in game two, as the latter took the series. With the results, the Bronx Rams fall to 13-19 overall and 4-5 in Atlantic 10 play, while the other Rams improve to 13-19 and 6-5, respectively.
The Rams were stifled by Rhode Island starter Liz Lynchard in game one, reaching base seven times but failing to score.
Holly Beeman got the start and was saddled with the tough-luck loss, limiting her opponent to two runs over three frames with a pair of strikeouts, while Lynchard struck out eight.
Lynchard began game two and
Bailey Enoch's second-inning solo home run was her only blemish through three frames before Fordham plated three in the fourth. The inning began innocuously as
Julia Martine doubled but was deemed to have left her base early on a fly out, but with two outs, the offense rallied, starting with an Enoch walk and
Eva Koratsis' single to right.
Sarah Taffet doubled the other way to drive in one, leading to a pitching change to yesterday's starter, Zaun.
Amanda Carey welcomed her to the contest with a two-run single up the middle. The hosts did get one back in the bottom half with a solo shot.
Rhode Island took advantage of two miscues in the field in the fifth inning to score five runs, three unearned, to take control of the contest. Back-to-back singles led to a double steal and then a field error led to the second. A two-run home run followed to put the hosts up one but it was Power's RBI double with two outs that would prove to be the difference in the game. Fordham got one back in the sixth through a Koratsis solo home run to straightaway center and put two runners on in the seventh, but Rhode Island was able to escape the jam.
Amanda Carey enjoyed a great day at the plate, going 4-for-4, with three of those coming in game two, with two RBI and a double.
Neleh Nogay went 3-for-5 with a steal, Martine notched a trio of hits and a steal, and Koratsis had two knocks and two runs. Enoch, who walked and scored twice, appeared in relief in both games, allowing one run over four innings.
This is the first Rhode Island series victory since 2012, when all series were just two games, and second since 2002.
Fordham returns to action at St. John's this Wednesday, April 12, at 3 p.m.
