Davidson, N.C. – (March 31, 2023) – Davidson's Michael O'Shaugnessy drove in four runs, while Will Schomberg allowed three earned runs with four strikeouts to give the Wildcats a 7-5 win over the Fordham Rams at Wilson Field to open Atlantic 10 play.
The loss snapped Fordham's five-game win streak, putting the Rams at 11-15 on the year, while Davidson has now won six in a row, improving to 14-10.
Fordham opened the scoring in the first inning, as
Ryan Thiesse was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt.
Daniel Bucciero then plated Thiesse with a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.
Davidson answered with four runs in the second inning on a two-run single by Nick Calero and a two-run double by Michael O'Shaughnessy to grab a 4-1 lead.
The Rams then tied the game with a run in the third inning and two in the fourth to make it a 4-4 game. In the third, Bucciero and Thiesse did the damage again, as Thiesse reached base on a single down the right field line and later scored on a single by Bucciero. The fourth inning saw an RBI-single by
Sebastian Mexico and an RBI-double by
Nico Boza to tie the game.
However, the Wildcats regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three times for a 7-4 edge. O'Shaughnessy highlighted the frame with a two-run single, while Ryan Wilson had an RBI-double.
Fordham cut into the lead in the sixth inning, making it 7-5, when
Zach Selinger hit a solo home run to left center, his team-leading sixth of the season.
The Rams would get the tying run on base in the eighth and ninth innings, but unfortunately for the Rams, Davidson closer Bennett Flynn would keep Fordham off the scoreboard, recording six strikeouts over three innings for his second save of the season.
For Fordham, Bucciero was 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI, while Thiesse had a hit and two runs scored.
Nolan Hughes was also very grood out of the bullpen, throwing 4.2 hitless innings with five strikeouts.
The same two teams match up for game two of their series on Saturday at 3:00 PM.
