Staten Island, N.Y. – (March 15, 2023) – On a blustery day on Staten Island, the Fordham Rams rallied for four runs in the top of the eighth inning to break a six-all tie and defeat the Wagner Seahawks, 10-7, at SIUH Community Field.
After Wagner opened the scoring with a run in the first, Fordham scored twice in the second for a 2-1 lead. The Rams load the bases and picked up an RBI-single to right by
Zach Selinger and an RBI-infield single by
Ryan Thiesse.
The Seahawks then scored once in both the second and third innings to regain a 3-2 edge, before Fordham scored three times in the top of the fourth to grab a 5-3 lead.
Ryan Rockhill led off with a single to left and stole second.
Jack Vallario then singled to the right side, allowing Rockhill to score. After
Michael Brueser reached on a hit by pitch,
Peter DeMaria doubled into the left field corner to score both runners for the lead.
Wagner answered immediately with three runs of their own for a 6-5 advantage, highlighted by a two-run single by Griffin Selby.
Fordham knotted the game at six in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Thiesse reached on an infield single and moved to third on a double by
Michael Brueser.
Daniel Bucciero then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Thiesse from third.
The score stayed tied until the eighth inning, when Fordham exploded for four runs and a 10-6 lead. With two on and two outs, Bucciero connected on a two-run double to right off the wall and ended up at third on the throw home. DeMaria then lined a double to left to score Bucciero for a 9-6 advantage.
Michael Taylor then picked up his third hit of the game, an RBI-single, to score DeMaria to cap the scoring.
Aric Berg and
Ben Kovel then shut down the Seahawks the rest of the way. Berg (1-0) earned the win in relief allowing two hits over three innings of relief with three strikeouts, while Kovel struck out the side in the ninth.
At the plate, DeMaria was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored, and three RBI, while Taylor a 3-for-5 with an RBI. Bucciero went 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI with Thiesse and Rockhill each scoring two runs.
The Rams are right back on the field on Thursday for a 1:00 PM game at Houlihan Park against Lafayette in a re-scheduled game from Tuesday.
