Bronx, N.Y. – Fordham volleyball battled the reigning Atlantic 10 champion Dayton Flyers but suffered a four-set defeat in a rematch of Friday's contest. With the loss, the Rams fall to 6-7 overall and 0-2 in league action, while the Flyers improve to 7-6 and 2-0, respectively.
The Rams fought hard in the opening frame to erase an early 10-4 deficit with a 14-0 run on
Zoe Talabong's serve that included six aces and seven kills. Then it was the Flyers turn to erase a deficit, eventually tying the frame up, 20-20, with a 10-2 run. Fordham staved off one set point thanks to an
Aria De La Rosa kill but a service error and attack error gifted the visitors the set.
The hosts were undeterred and evened the match up at one-set apiece, leading for much of the early portion of the set then rallying late from a four-point deficit to lead by one, 19-18, forcing the Flyers into a timeout. Dayton retook the lead quickly, 20-19, but an Amelia Moore error in attack tied the set up and the Rams rattled off four straight points on
Megan Brzozowski's serve, capped by a block by
Whitley Moody and
Chloe Pejouan, then took the frame two points later on a Moody kill.
The Flyers rebounded with 20 kills in the third set, hitting .341, and controlling the frame, then hit .324 with 15 kills in the fourth, rallying past the Rams late en route to the victory.
Moody led the way with 13 kills, adding 14 digs and matching her career-high of five blocks, two solo, while De La Rosa and Pejouan combined for 22 kills. Pejouan posted seven blocks to lead the defense, also with two solo. Brzozowski finished with 39 assists, seven digs, two kills, and an ace, while
Mallory Lipski racked up 20 digs and three assists.
The Rams continue Atlantic 10 play with a pair of matches against new league foe Loyola Chicago next weekend, starting on Friday, September 30
th, at 7 p.m.
